first day with the roller hockey ball

|

Jonny built up about a dozen awesome mallets, but we still have to work on getting lighter more modern ski poles.

We also need to get the right balls, cause we busted through two orange balls today that are too hard/brittle for the 32ºF weather.

I found myself looking down at the ball a lot more than usual, and i'm so far frustrated at not having a hockey-style angle on my mallet for stick-handling, and being able to keep my head up to look around. also i was surprised by the amount of ricocheting and bouncing and chasing after the wild ball... means a lot more biking than before. i think the big ball game is still faster, but less going in tight circles.

And despite a big spill when my chain snapped, it was a good start...

It's a different game.

Totally. The style of play is way different. Hang in there and it will start to flow by it's own rules. Certainly, the riding is more technical, and taking big hits will do less for you. I hadn't thought about how much more time I spend looking down, but it's true.

A hockey-angled mallet may help you to move the ball around, but it would make shooting off the end pretty tough.

And as you probably know from hockey, having boards to play off of adds another element to the game. If you guys wanted to start playing on the roller hockey rink.

If you call around to the central Wisconsin ski resorts, you may be able to score the dented, bent, and unpaired rental equipment poles at the end of the season. We're going to pick up a bunch later this week.

lex just started hardcourt too

we've been playing weekly hardcourt for the past month after spending the last year or so on grass only. As much as I love grass games with a fat ball, I have to admit that I am quickly falling in love with the quickness and control of a new surface.

we also tried several small balls and settled on the actual roller hockey, or street hockey ball as the best, most durable ball with the best action to it.

about the mallets, we're going to try some polyethylene tubing (it's white, but not PVC) next week because the heads we made out of ABS (the black stuff) cracked to quickly on us. If I don't forget, I'll report back with how well it holds up.

nothing but net

how did the nets hold up with the little ball...did it gobble it up too much?

no, the nets were fine

the tennis nets were fine, except near the uprights that hold the nets up, where there is about 3" of space. but even the 6" balls would go through there anyway.

the chainlink fence was actually more of an issue, the ball would die right beside it so there was a lot more digging than we're used to.

yellow balls

for the really cold days you need to get the yellow balls. they are soft when warmer out but harden up when you drop down into the single digits. the only place i know to get them is online or at sports authority.
