So we came down to play in the Cuttin Crew Classic polo invite. Our normal team of ben/jonny/kevin was broken up by kevin testing positive to a blood transfusion earlier this spring so we picked up a third in the very capable Mike Morrel. As always Milwaukee came in style, sporting there color co-ordinated jump suits. In a move that surprised many, i gave up the dan marino for a better geared ratio bike that i had loanded to Morality earlier this summer. The tournament was laid out in such away that each team played a round robin against everyone, so we played a full on 9 games in full during the initial series against a full assembly of teams. The games were played first to three points or whoever was ahead at 10 minutes was declared winner taking three points for a win, and one point for a tie.

Milwaukee A team cruised through the round robin with an undefeated record, they beat us 1-0 in what was probably the best game of the day. I would have loved to play it out to 3 but in interest of time we called it at 10 minutes. Madison made few friends in chicago with a controversial intentional foul by myself for not leaving the goal area after a foot down and after we took a 1-0 lead we played keep away over by the lake. I guess we will not be winning the sportsmanship awards this time around. The finals ended up being Milwaukee A team versus Madison/Chicago. We got there by ben putting in what as probably the goal of the tournament, a shot going uphill from about 30 feet out that placed the ball through lucky's triangle.

The finals were intense as always, cody started things off nicely with a ben style goal while falling off his bike. We attacked quickly and ben put one through after cody fell off his bike maybe 10 times in the goal without pulling out. I guess it comes around. Jake put milwaukee ahead with a sweet brake down the sidelines pulling through the middle and a sweet shot through the posts. I thought we were done but things changed quickly with milwaukee making a tactical error that allowed me to final put in a fast break goal and then seconds later ben put a pass through the middle to me that allowed for me to score around cody's bike tire. I was stoked to win this one, it could have gone either way but we got lucky and took it home. Milwaukee fucking rocked it this time around and it is always a good time rocking it with them.

Okay, a few observations from the tournament. First, why does everyone leave a goalie back. I think this is a huge disadvantage to the team and a really bad strategy in the long run. We were able to take advantage of this especially against chicago in the semi-finals. Also i really think that people should play on freewheels, it is a huge advantage. Okay, finally, chicago fucking upped their competitiveness big time. Putting two teams in the semi-finals, it is good to see the midwest in general increase their competiveness throughout. I'm super proud to be part of this community.

One last note, we had our detractors as well, with the coasties calling us out on playing on grass as if our game was less worthy because of that. The whole debate is annoying and hopefully when the milwaukee kids head up to Ottawa next week and kick some ass it will finally show that the midwest is where the true spirit of bike polo lives.

i'm innocent.

i swear i am the victim of a heinous conspiracy orchestrated by a bunch of "doctors" wearing green and yellow jumpsuits

1. That last goal of Ben's

1. That last goal of Ben's went above my top tube (not a goal in regular play) but below the top of the goal posts (the zone established for the Cuttin Crew). The perfect spot for the tournament. Well done.

2. We've never needed a sportsmanship award before, because everyone used to be a good sport. Nyah.

3. Thanks, Chicago has been working on it's game.

4. The goalie thing. We discuss this among ourselves a lot. The value of having a man back to combat fast breaks vs. being up to help the offense. Personally, I stay back more against offensive or fast teams, and move up more against equally matched or slower teams. MKE seems to keep a man in goal for an entire game. In Tucson (or was it Lexington?) any player can only stay in goal for a count of three!
It's an effect of playing zones, which we've tried to do in the last two tourneys. It seems like at home I'm out of the goal more. But against A teams from Wisconsin, I spend a lot of time in there. Getting scored on. Grrrrr.
Also, we have mostly switched to freewheels. Or at least close to 2:1 ratios, which has increased our competitiveness a lot.

5. The tournament structure was both great and a little frustrating. I really enjoyed being able to play every other team there. The two fields worked out great, at least for us, because we never played two consecutive games, nor did we ever get cold and stiff. Way to go Ben!

6. I, also, am proud to be a part of this community and don't much care for a national debate about who has the "true" polo spirit. As long as we all have fun, respect each other, and keep getting better, nothing else matters to me.

7. Ben, you wanted to talk with me about an X-3 variation?

on sportsmanship and other issues

1. I think in someways the level of bending the rules is really high in competitive games in the last couple of tournaments, in someways i would say welcome to the big leagues, it means a bit of respect that your opponent is willing to throw an extra elbow or stick their leg out to block a goal. I do apologize for not circling out there, it was a pretty dick move, wont happen again. I think that we did get a pretty vicious payback with cody falling down in the goal like 12 times and then sticking his foot out to stop a goal. My basic take on it is to let it go, for the most part i find it escalates things once you start arguing things out.

2. I agree, the freewheels are making a huge difference, your speed and aggressiveness are way up. I even like ben's coaster brake.

3. Basically having a person back is a good idea but i think that the person back has to have their back wheel to the ball. But it is a huge advantage when we are playing defense against only three people. I was playing defense in most games but ended up scoring the most goals for my team. Three attackers just makes sense.

4. looking forward to the midwestern championship in milwaukee on concrete, madison plays better on crete anyway, it is about time.

Thinking about the game

Thinking about the game right now, while I'm calm and sitting down, I understand what you are saying about the man back being good, but the man in the goal being less good. Being able to block the path of the ball towards the goal while moving with bike or mallet usually does a better job of defending than sitting blocking the goal does.
However, I do not play as aggressively as some others do. For whatever reason (age) I have trouble making myself run into or even very close along side another player. If it looks like that is actually a better defensive strategy, we may adjust our teams such that I play midfield, moving the ball to the striker, and someone who doesn't mind skidding into the path of a player on a breakaway can take defense.
If the offensive player has time or speed on their side, you're right that sitting in the goal just shows them where your bottom bracket is so they can aim at it. However, if the ball has moved slowly upfield, and there are a lot of bikes around the goal, planting a goalie does block a lot of shots, because they can't be as carefully aimed and/or they come off other bikes/players.

I think that's the key right there. And it doesn't defend well against Madison because y'all move the ball upfield more quickly than we do in Chicago.

not really sure what you are

not really sure what you are trying to say here, but i do agree, when a team is on offense it makes sense to have a goalie. I think the real secret is that it is easy to run someone down who has the ball even if you are 20 feet back, the thing that takes so much time is turning around, your pretty fucked if you have three facing forward and the other team makes a run. Also another thing about having a third person on the attack is that it opens up the passing lanes a lot and makes for a wider field in general. Okay, best of luck in Ottawa.
